The Newsletter – October 2009

Detox Your Home

I always imagined Carbon to be a forum where people could get together to discuss and share ideas. When designing the store we kept the idea of these forums in mind. By having rolling tables rather than fixed ones, we can tailor our store to create the mood and the space needed for our gatherings of minds. Now that October is here we are ready to launch our very first forum – a seminar named Detoxing Your Home (details below). We are planning to hold these seminars on a monthly basis throughout the year. These informal seminars will discuss various topics in alignment with the intentions and values of Carbon Environmental. I welcome all friends, family and guests to the store to attend.
Enjoying life’s voyage, that is homeward bound,
Allison

Seminar Series – Detoxing Your Home
Each year, from October to June, Carbon Environmental Boutique will be hosting monthly seminars and discussion groups to discuss eco issues and mindful living. October’s seminar topic and details: Detoxing Your Home
Focus: Discovering and eliminating the toxins found in everyday items
Date: October 21st, 2009
Time: 7:15-8:30pm
Cost: Free
Light refreshments will be served.
The evening will include a short introduction, a viewing of the one-hour documentary Homo Toxicus, followed by a discussion of the film. This is a great way to find out what is safe in your everyday products, and what, unfortunately, isn’t.

A contest!!
Please help us in naming our seminars! We would like your help in giving these seminars a name – perhaps something fitting like “Small Steps Seminars” or something quirky like “Ecoholics Anonymous”. The winner of this naming contest will win a $50 Carbon Environmental Boutique gift certificate. The winning name will be announced in our next newsletter.
Submit your entries to HYPERLINK "mailto:info@carbonboutique.com" info@carbonboutique.com, but hurry, contest closes October 14!

A sale!!
October is Fair Trade Month!! Please help us in celebrating and supporting the fair wage paid to those that produce our goods. All of our certified fair trade items are 15% off for the month, including Coyuchi bedding, bath towels, robes and pajamas, GLO baby clothing plus a whole bunch of fixin’s for colder temperatures - Saphara Coffee, Zhena’s Gypsy Teas and Cocoa Camino hot chocolate. We shan’t forget chocolate: Zazubean chocolate bars are also a fair trade bargain.

The Newsletter – August 2009

Word of the Month: Beautiful
What the Word Beautiful Means To Us at Carbon Environmental: Beautiful is a word we use here at the store not only to describe how visually pleasing an item is, but also to describe its inherent goodness. Is the item safe? Has it been consciously designed? Did the workers who made the product earn enough to support themselves and their families? Does the item lessen planetary impacts? If a product can answer these questions in the affirmative then, to us, it is a thing of beauty inside and out. Look for the purposeful use of the word beautiful throughout this newsletter.
Verdantly yours,
Allison

Back To School: Returning to the September to June Routine
Like ringing in the New Year, September is a time of beginnings: new schedules, new routines, resolute ideas. We are happy to offer a number of beautiful items to our store’s collection to celebrate this time of year with smart, green ideas – new school and lunch supplies, yes, but also many other new products will grace our shelves.

To Market! To Market! Jiggedy Jig!
Did you know that the 104th Street Promenade is home to the Downtown Farmer’s Market? Every Saturday up to and including October 10th dozens of vendors are just outside Carbon’s front doors from 9am to 3pm. The market is a gorgeous way to enjoy a few hours experiencing fresh, local produce, homemade delicacies and handmade treasures under the canopy of the sky. Carbon is a loud cheerleader in the support of local farmers. Hurray for farmers! Three cheers for labour! We’re loco for local!!

We are very pleased to announce that Carbon Environmental has welcomed a new member to our staff. Cheri has joined the Carbon family as Store Manager. We absolutely adore her, and we know you will too!

The Santa Barbara Sectional elegantly combines contemporary design, comfort, and ecological intelligence. Designer Robert Craymer utilizes natural, healthy materials to create his innovative eco-friendly furniture collection. The sofa frame is made of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certifed wood. The springs and screws are made of recycled steel. All glues and stains are non-toxic, water-based and formaldehyde-free. The cushion options are natural latex, natural soy or recycled foam. A wide range of upholstery options are available using sustainable fabrics such cotton, linen, hemp, and bamboo.

Join the Litterless Lunch Revolution!

Bring your own lunch in a swanky tiffin.
Eat with your very own beautiful bamboo cutlery rather than using cheap disposable utensils.

By bringing your own filtered tap water in a Klean Kanteen you save plastic water bottles from being made and aquifers from being drained.

For kids and adults alike laptop lunches are sweeping the nation, just ask Steven and Chris!

Carbon Environmental Natural Rubber Mattress Collection

Natural rubber is the core support system in this Carbon Environmental mattress series. Natural rubber is inherently anti-microbial (mildew, molds, and bacteria simply cannot live in natural rubber) and resistant to dust mites. It is also hypoallergenic and dust-free, creating an allergy-free sleep experience.

Why natural rubber?
Natural rubber is chosen for its flexibility and stability. In addition, it provides excellent heat regulation, active moisture regulation and efficient air circulation. Natural rubber is an ideal choice for achieving superior comfort and rest for two people of differing weights as movements do not travel across the mattress. The soft, organic cotton cover is quilted with organic cotton batting and a layer of pure wool.

Carbon's June newsletter

The Newsletter – June 2009

I’ve been wondering – if April showers bring May flowers, what do May’s gusting horizontal snowfalls bring? If in-store happenings are in any way connected to the weather of the planet, horizontal snowfalls brought two friendly new faces to Carbon Environmental, Lindsay and Ehren. First flowers, now people – I’m going to wish for the weather to do something with chocolate for this month!

As always, enjoying nature’s and life’s adventures,

Allison

Most common phrase heard in the store this month: “I can’t wait for the Farmer’s Market to open!”

Pssst! Our sincere congratulations to everyone who has purchased a beautiful organic mattress. We are so thrilled to firmly support your healthy sleep, no pun intended. J

Our grand opening bash was a smashing good time. Lots of d’lishous organic food (thanks to the folks at D’Lish) and yummy organic wine (thanks to the folks at DeVine) was consumed in the kindest of company. Marc and I would like to thank everyone who came out and celebrated with us.

Grand Opening Celebration

Saturday April 25, 2009

10am-6pm

(Nice font that looks semi-handwritten, this should somehow look separate from the main body of the newsletter. I was thinking this part could look like a letter and the rest look like it was encased in text boxes.)

Welcome to our first newsletter! Our first two inaugural months at Carbon have been a delight. I would like to thank all of our guests for their enthusiastic support of our store and our mission. We are so excited to help people detox their homes, thrilled to support ethical manufacturing and honoured to share and trade knowledge with you about important issues. On behalf of Wanda, Ben, Marc and myself, thank you so much for bringing your sunshine into our lives.

Most common phrase heard in the store: “Mmmm… it smells so good in here!”

Carbon Copy: This newsletter was designed using Spranq Eco Font. So even if you did decide to print it out (on 100% post-consumer recycled paper), it would use 20% less ink! That means less ink used, less ink cartridges in the landfill and less money wasted.   Check out the Dutch holey-cheese font at http://www.ecofont.eu/ecofont_en.html

All newsletter recipients get 15% off organic, fairtrade chocolate in April. Just use our spring-themed code word “Puddles”.
